Celebrate Hispanic Heritage At The Latinas In Aviation Global Festival In Maryland

Thursday, August 29, 2024

Fig Factor Media, in collaboration with the College Park Aviation Museum, will host the fourth annual Latinas in Aviation Global Festival on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum located at 1985 Corporal Frank Scott Drive in College Park, Maryland.

Timed to coincide with the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, this family-friendly event will highlight Latina pioneers and authors as they share their personal stories with the audience. The festival will include cultural celebrations featuring demonstrations, children’s activities, community art projects, an author meet-and-greet session, giveaways, and live performances by Sol y Rumba Band and Sol y Mariachi. Admission to the event is free.

The festival will also see the launch of “Latinas in Aviation Vol. IV” by Fig Factor Media, a series that documents the inspiring journeys of resilient women making their mark in the global aviation industry. This latest volume will spotlight 25 women, including pilots, aviation students, dispatchers, and administrators, who continue to inspire and encourage others aspiring to enter the industry.

Jacqueline S. Ruiz, the creator of “Latinas in Aviation,” is eager to welcome and showcase these women as part of the sisterhood of authors.

This book series has given wings to these women to explore and embrace the endless possibilities that have positively infused their lives,” said Ruiz. “Their stories give readers the ‘fuel’ to leave their fears behind, watch their lives take flight, and expand their horizons.”

The featured authors in this volume are:

“The growing popularity and awareness of the event is a testament to the impact of the initiative,” she said. “Supporting our local community, empowering our youth and providing them with the needed support to find their path is one of the museum’s strategic priorities. As our Latina family keeps growing every year, Latinas in Aviation Global Festival is bringing positive change to our local community.”

Nadine Boksmati-Fattouh, Ph.D., the Museum Director at College Park Aviation Museum, has played a crucial role in bringing these annual festivals to life. Boksmati-Fattouh expressed that collaborating with these Latina aviation trailblazers “is very humbling. Voicing those underrepresented communities and sharing their inspirational stories allows us to connect more deeply and meaningfully with our Hispanic community.”

Adriana Ocampo Senior, one of the book’s authors from Dallas, described her participation as “an incredible honor and profound milestone.”

“The Latinas in Aviation Global Festival is important in the Hispanic community because it serves as a beacon of representation, inspiration, and empowerment,” she said. “This event highlights the significant contributions of Latinas to the aviation industry, challenging stereotypes and breaking barriers. This celebration of achievement and resilience showcases role models who can inspire young Hispanics to pursue their dreams and aspirations, knowing that they too can excel in fields where they are underrepresented.”
